I have brushed an Aussiedoodle coat three or four evenings a week for two and a half years, and I can tell you the exact moment I stopped dreading it. It was the night I finally sprayed June's coat with TropiClean Dog Detangler Spray before picking up the slicker. The brush glided where it used to snag, the knots behind her ears loosened instead of fighting me, and a brushing session that used to be a fight became 15 or 20 quiet minutes. If you own a curly coated dog, you already know what I mean. The coat mats behind the ears, in the armpits, along the collar line, and if you skip even a few days, you are looking at a shave down at the groomer.
June is a three year old standard Aussiedoodle, about 48 pounds, with a wavy curly blue merle coat. Her puppy coat started matting at about six months old, back in early 2024, and that is when I bought the TropiClean spray. One bottle lasts me roughly two to three months, and I use it on a dry or barely damp coat, never as a bath product. Here are the ten reasons I keep buying it.
The spray that made brushing nights easier
TropiClean Dog Detangler Spray adds slip to a curly coat so the brush glides and knots loosen. It is the first thing I reach for on brushing nights.

A tangle is a snag you can work out in a minute. A mat is a solid felted clump that has to be cut or shaved. TropiClean adds enough slip that small knots behind the ears and in the armpits loosen while I brush, instead of growing into mats by the next grooming appointment. It does not dissolve a felted mat, and I do not pretend it does. Tight mats go to the groomer. But for the daily and weekly tangles that turn into mats if you ignore them, the spray is the difference between a quick brush and a shave down.
The brush glides instead of snagging
I use a Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush, and before the spray, the pins would catch on dry curls and pull. June would flinch, and I would feel like the bad guy. With a light mist of TropiClean on a section, the brush moves through her coat the way it is supposed to. The spray does the work of reducing friction, so I can brush with a lighter hand, which matters on a dog with sensitive skin.
It makes line brushing actually work
Line brushing means parting the coat in small sections and brushing each one from the skin out. It is the right way to brush a double coated or curly dog, but it is miserable if the coat is dry and grabby. The spray gives each section enough slip that I can brush down to the skin without scraping, then check with a plain steel comb. On nights when I use TropiClean, I actually finish the job instead of quitting early.
Behind the ears stops being a battle zone
Every Aussiedoodle owner knows the spot. Behind the ears, the fur is soft, fine and constantly rubbing together, so it tangles first and worst. June used to pull away the second the brush got near her ears. Now I mist that area first, let it sit for a few seconds, and brush in small sections. The knots still exist, but they loosen instead of yanking. It turned the worst part of brushing night into just another part.
The armpits and collar line stay clear
The other two mat hot spots on June are her armpits and along the collar line, where the harness strap rubs. I walk June in a rabbitgoo No Pull Harness, and I have learned to brush her armpits and chest after walks because the strap line can rub curls into tangles. A quick mist of TropiClean on those spots before brushing keeps them from turning into the felted patches that send dogs to the groomer for a shave.
Brushing nights go faster, so they actually happen
The honest reason most Aussiedoodle coats get matted is that brushing gets skipped. It is hard to start a chore you know will be a fight. With the spray, my 15 to 20 minute sessions go by without a struggle, and June is calmer through the whole thing. I brush three or four evenings a week on the living room floor, and I do not dread it anymore. A routine you will actually keep beats a perfect routine you avoid.
It keeps the groomer from having to shave her down
June sees a local professional groomer about every eight weeks for a bath and a moderate length trim. She has never been shaved down, and the main reason is that I brush between appointments so the groomer does not have to start from a matted coat. The TropiClean spray is part of that routine. A dog that goes in with tangles instead of mats comes out with a trim instead of a shave, and that means her coat stays long and soft instead of starting over from scratch.
A little goes a long way
I mist a section, brush it, and move on. I do not soak her coat, and I do not use it as a bath product. One 16 ounce bottle lasts me roughly two to three months of brushing three or four evenings a week. For the amount of tangles it prevents, that is the cheapest part of owning a doodle coat.
The scent is light and fresh, not perfumey
TropiClean has a sweet, fresh scent that is noticeable while I brush and lingers on her coat for a little while before it fades. It does not smell like a bottle of perfume, and it does not fill the room. June does not sneeze or try to rub it off, which is more than I can say for some grooming products I have tried. It just makes the whole brushing session smell clean.
It is made in the USA and easy to find
TropiClean is made in the USA, which matters to me when I am spraying something onto a dog who will lick her own fur. It is also easy to reorder, because I never want to be out of it on a brushing night. I keep the bottle in a basket on the shelf by the back door with the slicker and the comb, so it is always right where I need it.
What I'd Skip
I would skip the detangler spray if you are hoping it will dissolve a felted mat. It will not. A mat that is already solid needs a groomer, and trying to brush it out at home will hurt the dog. I would also skip it if you are looking for a treatment for skin problems. TropiClean adds slip to the coat, but it does not treat skin irritation, and if your dog's skin looks wrong, ask your vet. And if you only brush your Aussiedoodle once a month, no spray is going to save that coat. The spray works because the brushing happens.
The spray does not dissolve a felted mat. It stops tangles from becoming one, and that is the whole job.
Give your Aussiedoodle coat an easier brushing night
